Nigeria participated during the 1st PAUDC ( December 8-14, 2008) with representation from University of Calabar, Cross River State University, Federal University of TechnologY Owerri, Federal Polytechnic Nekede. Nigerian students at the end of the event gave a good account of themselves, learning new debate format (World schools styles of debating), and the motivation to go back home and revive debating which is half dead and doesn't have the flair any longer to attract young people in Nigeria.
The debate were divided into various thematic areas, and motion which includes:
Environment- This house would tie development aid to University in green technology.
Washing and Corruption- This house would punish Banks if their clients launder money through their bank account.
Conflict Resolution- This house would use public criticism rather than quiet diplomacy to settle disputes in Zimbabwe.
Economy- This house would nationalize all natural recourses.
Choice- This house would legalize prostitution in all mining facilities

The finals comprised:The University of the Free State: B - Opening GovernmentNational University of Lesotho: A - Closing GovernmentUniversity of Namibia: C - Opening OppositionUniversity of Namibia: A - Opening OppositionThe Best Adjudicator trophy was awarded to Carl Persat of NamibiaThe Best Speaker of the tournament was Ruth Mulenga of BotswanaThe participating countries were:Nigeria, Ghana, Uganda, Kenya, Botswana, Lesotho, Namibia, Zimbabwe, South Africa, Zambia
